HOW TO CLAIM YOUR TAX DEDUCTION

Your charitable donations are still deductible!

CURRENT IRS GUIDELINES

If you are a taxpayer who itemizes deductions on federal tax returns (use of the long form), you are entitled to claim a charitable deduction.

Goodwill will furnish a receipt to you, the donor, when you request it.  You, as the donor, are responsible for obtaining the receipt and maintaining all tax records, as well as for assigning values to the goods contributed.  You should likst the items donated, provide a general description for each item (example:  kitchen table, 2 chairs, 4 men’s dress suits, etc.) and include the date of the donation.

If your noncash gifts to Goodwill have a total claim value for the year of $501 to $5,000:

In this instance, you as the donor are obligated to obtain IRS Form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contribution), complete only Section A, and file the form with the IRS.  No specific action is required by Goodwill.  Goodwill does not need to see the form.

Please remember:  If the total claimed value of your donations for one day exceeds $250, you, as the donor, need to prepare an itemized list of the items which Goodwill will verify by providing you a written receipt at the time of your donation.

VEHICLE DONATION PROGRAM

CHANGES EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2005

Beginning January 1, 2005, Congress has changed the laws regarding the donation of vehicles worth more than $500.  The donor will no longer automatically be entitled to deduct the fair market value.  Instead, the deduction will depend on what happens to the vehicle.

If the vehicle is donated to Goodwill Industries and is sold, the donor will be allowed to take a deduction equal to the proceeds of the sale.  If Goodwill Industries makes significant use of the vehicle in its charitable work, the donor will be allowed to deduct the fair market value.

Under the new laws when a vehicle is donated, Goodwill Industries will provide the donor, and the IRS, an acknowledgement of the gift that includes the taxpayer identification number and the vehicle identification number.  When Goodwill Industries sells the vehicle without either making real use of it, or doing serious repair or reconditioning work, the acknowledgement will include the selling price.  This is the amount that will be the maximum allowable donation.
